The diaphragm for the hive is also called a partition, dividing or plug-in hive board. It plays a role in organizing the hive. The diaphragm can be bought or made on their own. There are several options for this design; it is not difficult to install it.
What is the diaphragm in the hive and what is its role?
The diaphragm is a board made of sheet plywood. Its height and length correspond to the internal dimensions of the hive (case). In addition to the main part, the diaphragm also includes an upper block. It corresponds to the size of the frame for a particular hive. On the sides there are end bars, also called awards. This design is the simplest, but the diaphragm can be arranged in another way.
Use an inserted hive board to isolate the bee nest in the free space inside the hive. The diaphragm also allows you to divide the hive into compartments. It is necessary to apply it in those cases when the entire volume of the hive is not occupied by the bee colony.
Upon completion of the pumping of honey, the diaphragm can be used to isolate the evacuated honeycomb from the bees. This ensures the drying of raw materials. You can also isolate unsealed and low-copper frames. In the future, they can be used to replenish winter food supplies.
To fold the diaphragm, folds are used - the principle is the same as in the case with standard hive frames. The plug-in hive board has a thickness of 15 mm. A passage for bees should remain under the board.
It is recommended to use 1-2 such boards in each hive. They are necessary when you need to plant a young bee colony in the hive. Such a device is also required for wintering when there are few frames in the hive. The diaphragm in this case allows you to separate the side spaces of the hive and insulate them.
DIY diaphragm for the hive
To make an inserted hive board on your own, you need to choose the right materials. You will need plywood or suitable 10 mm wood and beams. The frame should have a standard size - 43.5x30 cm. The length of the upper bar is 47 cm, the width is 2.5 cm, the thickness is 2 cm. The width of the lower and side planks is the same, the thickness is 1 cm. It is better to use a construction stapler for fastening, as nails or screws can cause the thin material to crack.
The wood for making the diaphragm should be light and dry. Soft rock should be used.
End bars are equal in height to the main board. The upper bar protrudes slightly beyond its borders - this ensures the fixation of the diaphragm in the hive.
If you want to make a diaphragm as insulation, then after performing the main work the following manipulations are also required:
- choose a tight insulation - the piece should be exactly the same size as the inside of the frame;
- cut a piece of plywood corresponding to the dimensions of the external dimensions of the diaphragm - it is necessary to protect the insulation material from bees;
- fix the plywood with a construction stapler - it should sit tight and not move out;
- at the border of the frame, put a strip of insulation to avoid gaps on the diaphragm, also use a stapler for fastening.
As a heater for a partition, foam or foam can be used. The diaphragm for the hive must be of high quality. It is necessary to process every detail. The bars should be smooth (planed), all chips and roughnesses must be disposed of.
The resulting structure should be installed in the hive easily, but at the same time stand up tightly in it. If the diaphragm will be used during wintering, the presence of cracks or gaps will lead to the penetration of cold.
How to make a diaphragm for insulation with foam, described in this video:
The diaphragm is installed vertically in the hive. There are no features in this action. If there is a lower case in the hive, then the diaphragm due to the insulation will be closely installed to the lower frame - it is such a tight fixation that is the main task of warming. If the lower case is missing, then a small space will remain below. This passage is necessary for working bees.
If the diaphragm is made without insulation, then for wintering you can use side cushions. The size of such insulation should be such that it completely covers the entire space. You can use ordinary reeds. For warming, dried stems are used, and upper pillows are stuffed with panicles.
The diaphragm is a multifunctional partition for the hive. With its help, it is possible to solve various problems, including the separation of part of the bees, warming for the winter. It’s easy to make such a partition with your own hands - the materials for its manufacture are simple and affordable.
